Generation Theatre, a young Bay Area theater company, is putting a new twist on an old classic. The troupe will present the premiere of an unusual new English translation of Molière’s Tartuffe every weekend from April 23 to May 16, at the Off-Market Theater. The play begins at 8:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays and at 3:00pm on Sundays.

“This is brand new translation in Alexandrine verse, to give the English text the rhythm of the original French,” says director David Valayre. “Without the rhythm, you lose the music. We want English-speaking audiences to hear the text of Tartuffe ‘swing,’ as Molière intended.”

Word is that Generation Theatre’s mission is to bring original texts to the stag. “So far, every manuscript we stage has been a world première,” says Valayre.

This production is no different. Set in 1950s America, it focuses on what Valayre calls “the other side of the text.” We say go see for yourself! Tickets are from $20.
